Nai Khanom Tom: The Legendary Father of Muay Thai

Muay Thai is more than just a sport — it’s a national treasure rooted in centuries of tradition, honour, and resilience. One name stands above all in its history: Nai Khanom Tom. Considered the “Father of Muay Thai,” his legend lives on in every fighter who steps into the ring.

🥊Who Was Nai Khanom Tom?

Nai Khanom Tom was a Siamese warrior from the ancient kingdom of Ayutthaya. He lived in the 18th century, a time when Thailand (then Siam) was under constant threat of war. He was known for his exceptional skill in a martial art that would later become known as Muay Boran — the ancient form of Muay Thai.

⚔️ The Burmese Capture

In 1767, the Burmese army invaded and destroyed Ayutthaya, capturing thousands of Thai citizens, including Nai Khanom Tom. The prisoners were brought back to Burma (now Myanmar), where the Burmese King Mangra decided to host a celebration and showcase martial arts from around the region.

The king called for a Thai fighter to face his best Burmese champions. Nai Khanom Tom stepped forward, and history was made.

🥋 The 10 Fights in a Row

Before the fight, Nai Khanom Tom performed the traditional Wai Khru Ram Muay, honouring his teachers and ancestors. The Burmese thought it was black magic — but soon realized it was something else: discipline, focus, and respect.

Then, Nai Khanom Tom fought — and won — ten consecutive matches against top Burmese warriors, without taking a break.

The Burmese king was so impressed that he reportedly said:

“Every part of the Thai is blessed with venom… Even with his bare hands, he can fell ten opponents.”

He granted Nai Khanom Tom his freedom, along with the other Thai prisoners. Upon his return to Siam, Nai Khanom Tom was hailed as a hero.

📅 Nai Khanom Tom Day – March 17th

To this day, Nai Khanom Tom is honoured every year on March 17th, known as “Muay Thai Day” in Thailand. Ceremonies are held across the country, with traditional fights, blessings, and rituals that celebrate the art and spirit of Muay Thai.

🔥 Why Does Nai Khanom Tom Still Matter Today?
